Sovereignty of God

The sovereignty of God is his absolute right and power to govern all things according to his own will and purpose. He is not sovereign over most things, or sovereign in general while leaving some area of reality outside his governance. Scripture declares that he works all things according to the counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:11), that not even a sparrow falls to the ground apart from the Father (Matthew 10:29), and that the king’s heart is like channels of water in Yahweh’s hand (Proverbs 21:1).

Sovereignty does not eliminate human responsibility. When Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery, they are responsible for their wickedness. Yahweh is also governing those same events toward his own ends. When Pharaoh hardens his heart against the plagues, he is making real choices that carry real consequences. Yahweh is also hardening Pharaoh’s heart to display his glory before Egypt and the nations. The Bible holds both together and does not resolve the tension by diminishing either side.

The sovereignty of God is not an abstract doctrine for theological debate; it is the ground of all genuine Christian confidence. If God governs all things, then suffering is not random, history is not out of control, and the gospel will reach every person Yahweh has appointed to eternal life.
