Humility
Humility is not low self-esteem or a manufactured display of modesty. It is an accurate estimate of one’s true position before God: dependent, answerable, and without any claim to his favour apart from grace.
James states the principle as a fixed law of how God deals with people: “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE” (James 4:6). Pride sets itself up as its own authority and therefore collides with the God who alone holds that place; humility yields the place to him and receives grace instead of opposition.
James follows the principle with a command: “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you” (James 4:10). Humility is not passive resignation but an active turning toward God in submission and repentance, and it is precisely this posture, not self-assertion, that God has bound himself to honour. The articles below trace this theme through several key passages.
