Firstborn

Why did Yahweh claim Israel’s firstborn?

After the Passover, Yahweh instructs Moses, “Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, among man and among animal; it belongs to Me” (Exodus 13:2). Israel’s own firstborn had lived only because the blood of the lamb turned aside the judgment that struck Egypt’s firstborn, so their firstborn belonged to Yahweh by right of that redemption.
