Cleansing of Conscience

Cleansing of conscience addresses a problem the Old Testament sacrifices could manage but never solve. The blood of bulls and goats could cover sin outwardly and maintain Israel’s access to the sanctuary, but it could not reach the worshipper’s inner sense of guilt before God. Something more was needed to answer the conscience itself.

How does Christ’s blood cleanse the conscience?

The writer of Hebrews states what only Christ’s sacrifice can do: “how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9:14). Christ’s offering reaches the very place the repeated animal sacrifices could not touch, because his sacrifice was once for all and morally sufficient rather than ritually symbolic.

What changes when the conscience is cleansed?

A cleansed conscience changes what a believer can do before God. Where guilt once kept the worshipper at a distance, Christ’s blood now gives confidence to draw near, “having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience” (Hebrews 10:22).
