Peace

Peace in Scripture is more than the absence of conflict. It first names a settled standing with God, restored where sin had made mankind his enemy, and only then extends outward into peaceable relationships between people.

How is peace with God secured?

Paul grounds this order plainly: “having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Peace with God is not something believers manufacture through effort; it is secured entirely through Christ’s finished work and received by faith.

What does true peace between people look like?

James shows what this peace produces among people: “the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace” (James 3:18), directly contrasted with the “disorder and every evil thing” that follow wisdom from below (James 3:16). True peace between people grows out of wisdom from above, not out of selfish ambition dressed up as harmony, and it bears the fruit of righteousness rather than mere conflict avoidance.
